PROTEST 2017: What we’ve learned

AT THE SCHOOLHOUSE GATE: Over 100 students voiced protests over U.S. Immigration policy February 2017.

Around 300 PRHS students gathered in the quad during lunchtime to protest the executive orders of the travel ban against Muslim-majority countries and the Mexico-United States wall on Thursday, Feb. 16. The demonstration was inspired by the #daywithoutimmigrants movement that occurred that same day and was headed by students of AVID.

The protest and the dialogue that followed on social media are examples of the democratic right to free speech. Likewise, a protest at school is protected by the Supreme Court case of Tinker v. Des Moines, which guaranteed constitution rights, such as freedom of speech and freedom to peaceably assemble, to students.
