Crimson Newsmagazine earned a 1st Place Best of Show Award for Website and 3rd Place Best of Show Award for Newspaper Tabloid at the Spring 2017 NSPA National High School Journalism Convention in Seattle on Saturday, Apr. 8, 2017.

Eight Crimson students and eight Advanced Video students attended with Advanced Video teacher John Rucker.

“We went on this trip to gain experience and we did, but we also walked away with a moment that we will never forget,” said senior Lauren Wassam, who is a five convention veteran on staff.

Crimson placed 1st in the Website division that identifies the 10 best sites at the roughly 3900-student, 200-school convention. Crimson placed 3rd in the Tabloid division that identifies the 10 best Newspaper Tabloids. This is the program’s second double-win since their success in Indianapolis in November 2016.

Junior Valeria Cisneros and seniors Lauren Wassam and Sadie Mae Mace lead Crimson Newsmagazine along with advisor Jeff Mount.

Leaders of the PRHS program are seniors Sadie Mae Mace and Lauren Wassam, along with junior Valeria Cisneros as chief editors. Mace and Wassam are three-year journalism students, and Cisneros is a two-year student.

Students were also able to sightsee and tour around Seattle.

“It was amazing bonding opportunity for the staff, along with exposure to different cultures. We are grateful for the amount of support from our community and advisor in this endeavor,” said Mace, who is a four convention veteran and winner of three invidual writing awards at the national convention.

Rucker and journalism teacher Jeff Mount advise Crimson media, and have grown PRHS journalism into a 150-student unified program aligned with Careers in Technical Education. Mount has advised Crimson newsmagazine and its website for 17 years.

The National Scholastic Press Association and the Journalism Education Association are non-profit education organizations striving to educate and recognize the work of student journalists, improve the quality of student media, and foster careers in the field.
