As a way to celebrate what would have been his grandfather’s 90th birthday, Andres Chavez, Grandson of Cesar Chavez, came to the PRHS gym to share the life of his namesake on March 23.

Chavez spoke of his grandfather’s childhood in the Great Depression and how his family survive. The Chavez worked 10-12 hour shifts with no overtime pay in over 100 degree weather. And with foods that had been sprayed with pesticide-raising cancer rates over 800 times the average just to feed themselves.

And many families today struggle with the same issue.

“California’s Agriculture industry continues to pay their workers poorly and do not offer health benefits nor retirement plans,” Chavez said.

Chavez wanted more for his friends, neighbors, and family. He started the Community Service Organization in his mid 20’s to make his dream real.

Now, years after his death his dream lives on and his grandson has traveled from school to school helping to share.
