Cal Poly bound Ashley Davis beats mile record

Blistering heat radiated off of the blue track at the 89th West Coast Relays at Buchanan’s Veterans Memorial Stadium on Saturday, April 2 as senior Ashley Davis left everything on the track in her invitational mile race–the most prestigious of three mile races that day—racing for a mile record she’s had her eyes set on since her sophomore year.

Davis broke the barrier and ran a 5:02.09, beating Maddy Cline’s record from 2011 by .80 milliseconds after two years of shying away from a sophomore best time of 5:03.13. Her junior year, Davis was a mere .63 milliseconds off the record.

Davis placed second in the race behind Central Valley’s Gabby Satterlee, receiving a massive four inch West Coast Relay medal and screaming cheers from fans and proud parents under the Bearcat easy up.

The boys mile record is also close to falling to junior Trad Berti who placed first in the invitational mile running a 4:18.44 and was a mere .33 milliseconds off of Zander Souza’s school record from 2012, followed closely by senior Gannon Chamberlain in third place at 4:19.09.

Berti said,”It’s a fast record yet I’m glad I’m close to it as  a junior.”

Additionally, Davis raced the invitational half mile, placing 11th with a time of 2:22.49, as well as the second leg of the open 4×4 in 62.5 seconds with the team of senior Gwen Lundy, senior Nathalie Barahona, and freshman Kendall Caruana placing third.

Freshman Pablo Cortes placed third in the seeded mile with a 4:40.32, the fastest mile time ran by a freshman at PRHS.

The boys 4x100m placed third in the open race with a time of 45.15 seconds. The relay includes senior Ty Jones, junior Steven Scouten, sophomore Javier Solis, and freshman Jordan Summers.

The runners head off to the prestigious Arcadia Invitational to compete against the best athletes from around the nation this Friday and Saturday with Trad Berti, Josh Potter, Gannon Chamberlain, and Luis Armendariz running in the invitational four by mile, Kristen Thompson in the shot and disc, Codie Wilshusen in the pole vault, and Ashley Davis running the mile.

A livestream of the event can be found here: Arcadia Livestream

Watch at about 9:30 p.m. for the boys four by mile on Friday and 10:15 a.m. for Davis’s mile on Saturday.
